Vipassana

When we practice Vipassana meditation we strive to get to a level of awareness where we see things as they really are without the colored glasses our mind applies to everything we see and experience.

It is easy to see this phenomenon in other people. We can look at friends and family members around us and notice that they think and believe in things that we know are a simply not accurate. We wonder how it is possible that they don’t see what is actually going on when we are looking at the same thing. We forget that we all see the world through our own individual lenses. In other words, others see the same phenomenon in us.

Depending on our personality, personal history and experiences we form preconceived opinions and ideas about everything in this world. That is why everything  we see in this world is affected by this coloring of our perception.

We practice vipassana meditation in order to see the mind without any coloring. To know it rather than control it, as Bhikkhu Sopako Bodhi says. To see your own mind clearly is to see ultimate reality. In order to get to that level we need to first learn to bring the mind home. To learn how to sit quietly and observe our own mind and our thoughts . Like a silent witness that quietly observes the wonderings of our mind and thoughts.

If you are taking your first steps on the path of meditation I recommend that you start your meditation journey by practicing Mindfulness Meditation first. You will learn to place your focus on your breath and keep it there. The practice will develop your ability to gain control over your busy thoughts and develop the stillness required to observe your mind without reacting or engaging in it. As you do this, you start seeing your own colored classes that are coloring and skewing your perception.
