Breathing Meditation
If you are into meditation, the one that is most familiar to most people is breathing meditation. This is the form of meditation where deep breaths are slowly drawn in and out in the aim of slowing the breath, making the mind more clear and lucid.
Typically, this form of meditation is done on the floor with legs crossed, hands clasped, and the eyes closed. The idea is to slow down and eliminate conscious thought allowing the mind to be a blank canvas as the person is drawn closer and closer to oneness with the Universe around them.
The breathing is done by slowly drawing deep breaths and exhaling at the same rate. Eventually, the goals is to get to a point where you are able to breathe steadily without doing it consciously. You are to allow the body to breathe itself.
Breathing is one of the functions that is impossible to classify as voluntary or involuntary. The reason is because it can be both, just depends on the situation. For example, you can feel as though you are breathing as you inhale and exhale consciously. But you can also experience the feeling of it breaths me as you are consumed with other activities or thoughts and the body does the breathing anyway. Thus, breathing can be seen as both voluntary and involuntary.
The goal of Breathing Meditation is to get to a point where the breathing is done involuntarily with the same passion, feeling, and healing as you would do if you were conscious. As you practice and grow in this skill, you will find that breaths get shorter and less and less oxygen is needed to fill the lungs and circulate the blood around the body. As the mind relaxes, you are sent into a state of total relaxation and oneness with the Universe around you.
Continue to practice and try to reach the level of enlightenment. No, it cannot be achieved over night, but with some practice you will experience the peace, joy, and serenity that meditation brings to one’s life.
